Our Friend Ron

Our friend Ron Kirby stopped by the shop several weeks back to pick up his next project car (a Porsche 968). While he was there we spent some time reminiscing about his experiences racing Trans Am in his Camaro, collaborating with NASCAR legends, and his passion for anything automotive. We hope to have Ron on an upcoming podcast so that you can hear his stories too. Below are pictures of Ron posing alongside of an old dirt track car that ran in Sumter, SC back in the early 60’s and Ron racing with the best of Trans Am in 1972.

968 Turbo Intake Changes

 

Since Porsche didn’t produce many of the 968 factory turbo models, adapting the 3.0 twin cam intake to turbo duty is a hurdle to overcome when converting to a boosted system. The original builders of this intake welded together parts from a 944 turbo intake and a 968 intake. Because we are converting to E85 for this build, we needed to upgrade the injectors to supply a much larger volume. The easy choice was an LS3 injectors. One concern we had was introducing a larger volume of fuel at the same angle as stock. The LS3 injectors are now aimed directly at the back of the valves instead of the cylinder wall. This should avoid any puddling in the head. A billet fuel rail replaces the inadequate stock unit. We also took this opportunity to remove the electric yellow powder coating and match the intake to the body color, Viola Metallic.

Update on the 968 Turbo Project

This project is well into its fourth year, and has a way to go. This coupe started as a $3,400 craigslist car that I drove home. Check out the video and our progress to date.

Five Speed Swap

We ran VIR with a highly modified automatic transmission, but we are graduating to a 5 speed manual for the Daytona race. Step one is cutting a hole in the floor of this old police car.

We begin to prepare for Daytona (April 2019 Champ Race)

Since the Intercepter hit a tire barrier during the 24 Hour Champ Race at Virginia International Raceway last August, we need to do some body work be fore we head to Daytona in April. Here is a short video of the initial teardown. Not much damage, so repairs should be easy.

1957 Chevrolet Panel Project

Stopped by Bob’s shop today to look at his 1957 Chevrolet Panel project. Dual wheels, 3500 chassis, Cadillac taillights, and 500 cu in Caddy engine. Can’t wait for this one to be finished! #sleeveless stuff
